Children : Children ages k-12 can learn and enjoy unicycling. Some kids seem to pick it up in hours, but most kids need at least 14 hours to learn to ride the basics. Although becoming strong and lean is a result of unicycling, it is not a criteria for learning. Most coaches are surprised that it is not the athlete that is most successful. They find the child with less natural skill is use to working harder at sports and will stick with it long enough to get results. Most children will learn to ride if they are given the time to do so.
Adult Supervision: Riding is NOT a criteria to be a coach. One person can supervise large groups of children as they learn to unicycle. Learning to ride is such an individual effort, trial and error as well as a coaches encouragement become the child's learning tools. They want the coach there to see them as they advance from riding 1 foot to 15 feet. Once children are riding the coach helps them share what they are learning and challenges them to gain skill or perform a routine.
Unicycles and Equipment: You will need enough unicycles for the kids in your group. At unicycle club we stock unicycles that will hold up in school settings where many children are learning. We also carry wrist guards, protective gear and helmets. When you are ready to purchase one wheel please visit our STORE, or take advantage of our quantity discounts and let us send you a Quote for your purchase order submission.
A Place and Time to Practice: The schools gym or open hallways are great places to learn and practice. Some teams use a parking lot, pushing off curbs or tennis courts pushing off the fence. Clear, smooth, flat surfaces, where kids can get a lot of practice time in is the best choice. Remember children need 14 hours of practice on average to learn basic unicycling skills. Providing time before school, after school or during the summer will get your club's skills to an impressive level. Once children can ride and mount their unicycle, the places you can ride begin to broaden. There are some boy scout troops that take their unicycles to the woods and ride trails.
